COCKATIEL:

(Nymphicus hollandicus)

Common over almost the entire Australian continent except most coastal areas, also in Tasmania. First described in 1792, they were bought back to England about 1840 and were first bred in Europe in 1845. Cockatiels have become popular pets due to their attractive appearance, low-cost, friendliness and intelligence. They can live for over twenty years, are small and can talk. Ground feeding birds, they exist almost entirely on seeds and seeding grasses. As a caged bird, cockatiels are second only in popularity to the Budgerigar.
